How to Keep to Your Wedding Budget Without Losing the Magic

Tips from a Central Coast Marriage Celebrant Who’s Seen It All

Weddings are one of life’s biggest celebrations and it is easy to get swept up in Pinterest boards, Instagram inspiration and “must have” trends. But let’s be honest weddings can get expensive very quickly. The good news is that you can absolutely have a beautiful and meaningful day without breaking the bank.

As a trusted Marriage Celebrant Central Coast, I have seen it all. From lavish affairs to heartfelt backyard ceremonies, the best weddings are not about how much you spend. They are about the love, the planning and the little details that matter most. Here are my top tips to help you keep your wedding budget in check while still creating a magical experience.

1. Get Clear on Your Priorities

Start by asking yourselves what really matters to you. Is it the food, the music, the dress, or the ceremony? Choose your top three priorities as a couple and be willing to simplify or DIY the rest. When your budget reflects your values, you will never feel like you are missing out.

2. Set a Realistic Budget Early

Be honest about what you can afford and stick to it. Track every expense as you go, even the small ones like candles or ribbons. Little costs can add up quickly. Having a clear budget will help guide your decisions and avoid surprises later on.

3. Go for a Non-Traditional Venue

Choosing a unique or non-commercial venue like a backyard, local park, or community hall can save thousands. Just check if you need council approval or permits. Many of my couples on the Central Coast have chosen stunning beaches or gardens that are low cost and breathtaking.

4. Limit the Guest List

One of the biggest ways to save is by keeping your guest list intimate. Smaller weddings mean fewer tables, meals, invitations and favours. A Micro Wedding with 20 or fewer guests can be incredibly special and allows you to spend more time with the people who matter most.

5. DIY Where It Makes Sense

If you enjoy being hands on, DIY can be a great way to save and personalise your day. Think handwritten signage, simple flower arrangements, or DIY favours. Just be careful not to overcommit and leave too much to do right before the big day.

6. Skip the Extras You Don’t Need

Ask yourself if you really need things like personalised napkins, a photo booth, or a ten tier cake. Focus on the elements that create memories — not the ones that just look good for five seconds.

7. Hire Experienced Vendors Who Can Do More Than One Thing

Choose vendors who are flexible and experienced. For example, I am not only a Celebrant NSW, I also offer wedding MC services. That means fewer vendors to manage and more value for your money. An experienced celebrant can also help guide you through planning, timelines, and keeping everything on track.

8. Choose a Weekday or Off Peak Date

Fridays, Sundays or even midweek weddings are becoming more popular and can be far more affordable. Many vendors offer discounted rates for off peak days and you will have more availability to choose from.

9. Keep the Ceremony Simple but Personal

You do not need a huge setup to create a powerful and emotional ceremony. As your Central Coast Marriage Celebrant, I help you create a custom ceremony that tells your story without needing props or expensive extras. Your words and your connection are what people remember most.

10. Remember What It’s Really About

At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating your love and commitment. The most unforgettable weddings are filled with laughter, happy tears, heartfelt vows and shared joy. You do not need to spend a fortune to create a day that reflects who you are as a couple.
